"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile fans have openly begged for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a close unit. Their visuals repeatedly depict them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to make music."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global following.

However the band will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
