The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
