Based on figures from Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have perished during detention beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has reported that the real figure is likely considerably higher, as a result of hundreds of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

“While we are offering documentation for a greater figure of fatalities than earlier indicated, this is an incomplete account,” he said. “We are sure that there are yet individuals who lost their lives in detention that we don’t know about.”

Organized Maltreatment

The institutionalised cruelty was accompanied by a disturbing rise in casualties documented across at least 12 detention centers in Israel. Over ten years preceding the war, there were typically several fatalities a year.

“This is not just an individual case occasionally. It is institutional and it will continue,” a representative commented, partially since there is a climate of virtual exemption from consequences for fatalities and maltreatment of Palestinian individuals.

Merely one incident of attacking prisoners has proceeded to court, with the soldier given a penalty to seven months. An attempt to try others over a brutal attack involving assault caused public rallies and the apprehension of Israel’s chief legal officer, with the accused individuals now insisting that charges against them are dropped.

No Legal Action

“In spite of this significant total of deaths, during 24 months not a single person has faced arrest,” the official stated. “There have been no prosecutions over any killing.

“While these measures continue to be enforced, every Palestinian in detention faces risk, including the healthy ones, including the juveniles who have no health problems.”

Prominent Examples

Certain fatalities in confinement have been publicly known, including a middle-aged medical chief who perished in prison after four months in detention.

An inmate incarcerated with the individual stated that he was led to the courtyard by guards shortly before his death, obviously hurt and unclothed from the lower body. His body has not been returned to Gaza.

Additional detainees who died in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and military gave researchers with the figure of casualties in confinement, and minimal further data such as the site where they lost their lives, but not the detainees’ identities.

Recognition Difficulties
