Astronaut Discloses Depression After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
